Speaking in what he thought was a private conference call to campaign donors on Wednesday, Mitt Romney discussed why he lost the election to Barack Obama last week. And apparently, he decided it was better to show the donors why he lost, rather than tell. That is, he was secretly recorded whining to these wealthy donors about how President Obama had only won the election by giving “gifts” blacks, Hispanics, and young people:
With regards to the young people, for instance, a forgiveness of college loan interest was a big gift. Free contraceptives were very big with young, college-aged women. And then, finally, Obamacare also made a difference for them, because as you know, anybody now 26 years of age and younger was now going to be part of their parents’ plan, and that was a big gift to young people.
“Likewise with Hispanic voters, free health care was a big plus. But in addition with regards to Hispanic voters, the amnesty for children of illegals, the so-called Dream Act kids, was a huge plus for that voting group.”
See kids? Your Writers’ Workshop instructor was right. It’s much more effective to demonstrate your point than to explain it. Romney could have just said “because I’m an out-of-touch asshole who resents nearly half of the American electorate and I keep forgetting that my conversations with wealthy donors will be secretly recorded and played back in the media,” but instead he just discussed how much he resents young people who want to get a college education or become U.S. citizens or have their health insurance actually pay for their medical costs … during a conversation with wealthy donors that was secretly recorded and then played back in the media.
We honestly can’t think of a better encapsulation of exactly why the American public rejected Mitt Romney.
