Okay, well many of them still think this whole Aurora massacre would have been prevented if only more people in that theatre had been carrying loaded firearms, but a new survey conducted by GOP pollster Frank Luntz reveals that a surprising majority of gun owners support certain gun control measures. Specifically, they don’t love the idea of letting crazy people carry guns. Or really violent people. Or people who dye their hair bright orange because they think they are a movie character. This seems fairly reasonable to us.
According to a recent survey of National Rifle Association members and non-affiliated gun owners, 82 percent of 945 self-identified gun owners said they support requiring criminal background checks for gun purchasers. The survey, which was unveiled at the Center for American Progress on Tuesday, revealed several other surprising data points:
As the Mayors Against Illegal Guns group points out, this survey of gun-owners and NRA members seems to contradict the official position of the NRA. One of the NRA leadership’s top federal legislative priorities is national reciprocity for concealed carry permits, which would effectively eliminate the requirements supported by its members by forcing every state to allow non-residents to carry concealed guns even if they would not qualify for a local permit.
