Pakistan to America: You’re Welcome for Killing bin Laden. What, Did You Think You Did That? Psshhh.
Remember back when U.S. Navy Seal Team 6 killed Osama bin Laden, and Pakistani politicians were telling everyone who would listen that the attack was an arrogant assault on Pakistan’s sovereignty? So 2011. The new hotness: telling everyone who will listen that it was totally Pakistan that was responsible for the attack. I mean, Pervez Musharraf himself practically jumped out of the helicopter and bad-assed his way into the compound to lead the way. He’s very nimble, that Pervez.
“The lead and the information actually came from us,” said a senior official with Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence Directorate (ISI). Specifically, Pakistani officials are claiming that they provided the U.S. with the cellphone number that ultimately led to the al-Qaeda courier who drew intelligence to bin Laden’s Abottabad compound. Which is weird, because, as the Washington Post reports, the Pakistani doctor who assisted the CIA in its hunt for bin Laden remains in Pakistani custody on charges of treason. But maybe “treason” is Urdu for “awesomeness” and “in custody” means “having a super fun time at the Hard Rock, Karachi”?
But in fact, that senior official who claimed ISI was responsible for catching bin Laden was just being modest. As another ISI official tells it, Pakistan is actually responsible for killing every al Qaeda member, ever. “Any hit on al-Qaeda anywhere in the world has happened with our help,” the official said.
