After weeks of debate, the Nebraska legislature has approved prenatal care funding for illegal immigrants. While the state already provides prenatal care for citizens who qualify through Medicaid, this bill will now allow undocumented mothers to receive the same benefits.
So Republican Governor Dave Heineman must be super psyched about this, right? He’s pro-life and therefore very concerned about the health and welfare of unborn children. He was, after all, responsible back in 2010 for signing a landmark measure into law that banned abortions at or after 20 weeks.
Mmmmm, no. He’s not happy. At all. In fact, he’s really, really pissed that all of these fetuses and their illegal mothers will be receiving care. Governor Heineman vetoed the bill initially, but the Nebraska legislature overrode the veto this Friday, and Heineman released an official statement condemning the overide: “Providing preferential treatment to illegals while increasing taxes on legal Nebraska citizens is misguided, misplaced and inappropriate.”
But Dave! The unborn child is not an illegal immigrant. So, if a fetus has an American mother then it is precious and must be saved, but if the mother is an illegal alien then it’s just a cluster of undocumented nerve cells and can go perform an ultrasound on itself if it’s so interested in being born?
Not all pro-lifers have taken the same stance. Nebraska Right to Life and the Nebraska Catholic Conference joined with Planned Parenthood in supporting the bill. Mike Flood, the conservative pro-life Nebraska state senator who was the author of Nebraska’s law banning abortions after 20 weeks, came out strongly in favor of the bill:
“If I’m going to stand up in the Legislature and protect babies at 20 weeks from abortion, and hordes of senators and citizens are going to stand behind me, and that’s pro-life, then I’m going to be pro-life when it’s tough, too.”
