Heeding the call for more unity in this divisive election, Democrats, non-Romney Republicans, and the media have put aside their ideological differences to join together in mocking the recent comments of Eric Fehrnstrom, Mitt Romney’s senior campaign adviser. What kind of comments prompted this bipartisan mock-fest? Asked in a CNN interview Wednesday morning whether Romney had been forced to adopt conservative positions in the Republican primary that could hurt his standing with moderates in November’s general election, Fehrnstrom said:
“I think you hit a reset button for the fall campaign. Everything changes,” Fehrnstrom responded. “It’s almost like an Etch A Sketch. You can kind of shake it up, and we start all over again.”
Santorum and Gingrich staffers were immediately dispensed to locate the nearest Etch-a-Sketches, with Gingrich holding up the toy at a campaign stop in Louisiana and the Santorum campaign tweeting the photo at right with the caption “@RickSantorum studying up on @MittRomney policy positions.” Meanwhile, the Democrats have already produced an entire campaign video over the purportedly horrendous remarks.
